Summer 2010 Shoe Trends for Women

Let’s face it: if there’s one aspect of fashion that grips women unlike any other, it’s the world of shoes. Footwear has long fascinated females, for reasons as diverse as the shoe designs themselves. For instance, some women love high heels for their unmistakable feminine factor, while others enjoy heels simply for the height they instantly bestow. Yet for countless women, shoes have just as much to do with attitude as with appearance. For example, many women feel more powerful in stilettos, while others feel sexiest and most confident when wearing boots.

Of course, the female fascination with footwear is partially fuelled by the vast selection of distinctive designs out there. With so many styles of shoes to choose from – and with many of these styles invoking a sense of individuality for the wearer – the shoe industry has much to keep women preoccupied. What’s more, new shoe trends are introduced on a seasonal basis, which means footwear fashionistas will always have a reason to stay “on their toes”.

That being said, summer 2010 shoe trends are sure to please the most discerning of footwear fans. Platform shoes are making a comeback with an added vintage feel to them, while peep toe ankle boots are a sexy (and height-boosting) way to show off that gorgeous pedicure. Wedge heels are also showing up all over summer trend reports as this season’s statement shoe, as are chic flats (think ballerina flats and Oxford brogues with frills and ruffles). Chunky shoes are a summer must-have – particularly backless, wooden clogs – as will kitten heels. Of course, no summer shoe collection is complete without a pair of strappy sandals (gladiator styles, woven uppers and flat thong sandals will be big). With regard to colours and patterns, look out for neutral, blue and greens hues, as well as tribal and animal prints. Many of this season’s shoes are also emerging with plastic and chiffon detailing – achieving a transparent, almost futuristic design – while dramatic stitching, lace-up designs and bold shapes are being incorporated into all shoe styles. Finally, artsy, “out-there” heels have earned a nod from the fashion world, meaning those quirky designs on the catwalk can be worn in the real world this season.

Ultimately, the fashion world’s summer shoe “portfolio” seems to incorporate a balanced mix of classic designs (with a twist) and novel styles – which means shoe lovers everywhere will have an ample supply of footwear to feed that famous, long-standing fascination for yet another season.
